Description of this Mercedes-Benz S-Class S500 Long Wheel Base 1995

(Long Wheel Base)

5.0l V8 322hp behemoth - in stunning condition!

This is a very originallow-mileage Mercedes S500 long wheel base for the W140 S-Classenthusiast finished in Brilliant silver metallic with the light grey leather interior and burl walnut wood finishes.
This is the second of the series considered by my many as the perfect upgrade version of the W140. These later cars have the more stream-lined side mouldings, "softer" trunk edges and "smoother" grill. It is easily identified by the clear front turn signals. In addition it has a more refined interior.
What few people know, is the W140 chassis is the design platform upon which the Mercedes Maybach flagship was based. Many of the designs and components continuing with the Maybach is/was a big endorsement to the 140 design. Furthermore, and even less known, is the W140 was the model when Mercedes was experimenting working closely with Rolls-Royce for the development of a super saloon before the Maybach (see design drawing below).
This S500 was rebadged by the previous long time owner as an S600 - V12, which is a bit silly, but these badges are easily removed if you think likewise.

The Auto check report is completely clean in all respects with no issues and the score is the highest in the range (full report below).

This S500 is an extremely well maintained and regularly serviced example, with good original low miles - 63,000 highway miles. (If this wasn't low enough and someone asked you to guess mileage based on condition and appearance you would honestly guess only some 30,000). The car has been gone over and all is in good shape including the engine wiring harnesses and the front suspension. All recently serviced with oil, filter, tune-up, wheel balancing and alignment. The tyres are in good shape with plenty of tread. Everything works as it should, including the soft close doors, trunk and reverse "masts". She drives like a dream, fast and powerful, stops sure and no noisy bumps, rattles or clunks - everything like a 500 should drive.
The exterior is in excellent and lovely condition. The body is straight with no dings or scrapes and the paint very shiny, consistent and lustrous. There are no signs of accident damage and the car top to bottom is completely rust free. The paint appears to be mostly factory original. Wheels are in good condition with the alloys not faded or road damaged. There is no sand pitting to the windscreen or front end. All turn signal and tail lamp lens are in good condition.
The interior of the car is in beautiful presentation. The leather is soft and supple without tears rips or wear (and without the usual "break away" of stitching often seen on the front seats). It is in original good condition and has not been re-dyed. Carpets are clean and wear-free (the previous owner always had 2 sets of floor mats, one on top of the other!). Head-lining is the suede-like finish and is spot-free. There are no cracks to the dash or any part of the interior and there are no signs of sun-fading anywhere. All burl walnut wood finishes, non-sparingly used in the 500, are excellent without any cracks, veneer lifting or unsightly wear or aging of any kind. The inside is simply in stunning condition and not far off a new car. The car has its original factory stereo. Also, its factory installed telephone which still works but obviously not connected.
Everything is operational in the car with no lights on in the dash (so common with the W140 series). Self closing doors & trunk., reverse masts and lumbar support all operational. All electrics; front and rear electric seats, heated seats, electrically adjustable exterior and interior mirrors and electric windows all in good working order.
This strong performing 500 behemoth is a real beauty - perhaps best appreciated by a W140 lover and enthusiast that can see just how unique condition this particular example is and how special the 500 is over lesser models in the class. A well cared for, original S500.

Special "good" points - reiterating the highlights (and the things that are normally a problem with W140 S classes):

1) Very well presenting paint all round that is consistent and high in lustre with no crazing. Body all very straight and the paint deep in shine with no unsightly dents or dings. Sides are dead straight.
2) Interior very clean with leather in top condition (no cracks or splits). Not re-dyed just extremely well looked after.
3) All features and instruments working. Self-closing doors & trunk, lumbar, reverse masts, no warnings lights on dash, electric options (seats, windows, head rests, rear blinds) all doing as they should.
4) A very tidy, clean and original car all round that has a good Car-fax history. Not "tarted up" for sale.
5) This car drives very firm and tight and I would have no hesitation in driving it across the country. It is that good!

Interesting information on the W140 & S500:

Comfort and convenience

Some new innovations for the W140 included:

  • Double-paned soundproofed glass was a new S-Class innovation first fitted on the W140. This form of window glazing allowed for improved soundproofing, reduced condensation, and other insulation benefits.
  • Electrically-operated exterior mirrors could be folded at the flick of a switch to ease driving in narrow spaces. Even the interior rear view mirror is electrically operated.
  • 'Parameter steering' was a system which made low-speed driving easier by reducing the effort required to maneuver in speed-sensitive situations such as parking.
  • This update model saw the introduction of Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR) traction control as a standard feature on V8 models. Previously only avaiable on the 600-V12.
  • Rear-parking markers, or guide rods. These rods extended from the rear corners of the trunk lid when in reverse, providing the driver with a guideline for rear maneuvers. In late 1995, this system was replaced by the sonar-based Parktronic system which measured the distance of the bumpers to nearby obstacles. This is example is one of the early "updated" models to retain the reverse masts.
  • 12-way powered, heated front seats, with 3 setting memory functions and lumbar support.
  • Windshield wipers w/heated washer system.
  • Electrically-operated automatic-dimming inside rear-view mirror that tied into the seat and steering wheel memory.
  • Heated exterior mirrors.
  • Four-zone climate control on LWB models.
  • Reclining and heated rear seats on LWB models.
  • The climate control system can be set to operate for 20 minutes after the engine had been turned off.
  • Rear passenger illuminated vanity mirrors.
  • Self-Closing Doors and Trunk

This Mercedes is part of a private collection. I am not a broker or retail-style car dealer; although licensed, I am a professional car collector of some30 years with considerable experience and knowledge of British and European Cars. I have a long standing reputation being associated with Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motor cars which I take seriously.I take a lot of pride in my cars and have fun in collecting and restoring them. However, auctions are not a game so when you place a bid or offer, and you are the winning bidder, please understand you have entered a binding contract. You cannot bid and win the auction and expect not to meet the terms and conditions. Bidding and/or winning does not mean you are expecting me to “hold” the car until you have the opportunity to inspect it. Any inspection contemplated should be undertaken BEFORE you bid or make an offer and I openly welcome any potential buyer to come and personally inspect the car. Once you bid ormake an offer, you are doing so to buy WITHOUT conditions. A $1,500.00 deposit (non-refundable) is required within 24 hours of the close of the auction and payable by PayPal.The balance of funds are required within 7 days of the close of the auction and must be provided by cashier’s check or bank wire.I cannot accept PayPal for the balance unless you are willing to meet the cost of transfer fees. Full payment must be made (and payments cleared) before the title and/or the vehicle is released. All payments are non-refundable. Payments as described above form an important part of this purchase contract and so, if all the funds are not received as outlined above, I reserve the right to terminate the transaction without notice. If there has been any deposit or other part payments received and I elect to terminate the contract, I reserve the right to keep any such deposits or payments and resell the vehicle to another bidder or interested party or re-list the vehicle at any time. I am happy to assist with shipping arrangements on a national and worldwide basis but the winning bidder takes full responsibility for pickup and/or shipping and at his cost.
As a collector and experienced restorer of classic cars, I make every effort to bring my cars to a very high standard. Unless specifically stated, the car is not of show standard but of good quality "driver" condition. Please understand, the very nature of these classics is such that it is not always possible to attend to every single item, or perhaps I may have inadvertently overlooked an item. Please note, fitted radio/stereo systems are usually subject to upgrade by purchasers so I do not ensure operation of these. Further, a feature or function that is working perfectly one moment, may decide to play-up the next. After all, it is some 22 years old. For this reason it is necessary for the following condition:
The vehicle is being sold "as-is/where-is"with no warranty expressed, written or implied.Any descriptions or representations are made with reasonable judgment and all efforts are made to ensure fair assessment andaccuracy but they are for descriptive and identification purposes only and are not to be construed as a warranty of any type. The seller shall not be responsible forerrors in description, authenticity, genuineness, or defects herein and makes no warranty in connection therewith. No allowance or set aside will be made on account of any incorrectness, unforeseen imperfection, defect or damage. It is the responsibility of the buyer to have satisfied himself as to the condition and value and to bid based upon that judgment solely. The seller shall and will make every reasonable effort to disclose any known defects at the buyer’s request prior to the close of the auction. Seller assumes no responsibility for any repairs regardless of any oral statements about the vehicle.Being a classic car in excess of 10 years of age, in most US states, the mileage may be recorded as “exempt”. In this regard the seller makes no warranties as to the accuracy of the mileage indicated or shown. I can hold the vehicle up to 30 days while you arrange shipping but you must immediately insure it. I will not bear any responsibility for any additional costs including storage, transportation, or repair after the close of the auction. Whereas I am happy to store the car in excess of 30 days from auction end, a cost of $35 per day shall apply beyond 30 days of auction end.
